New Delhi: In the wake of increasing hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities happening in Canada, the government asked Indian nationals and students there to "remain vigilant".
The Foreign Ministry meanwhile urged Canadian authorities to investigate and take action against the crimes, adding that perpetrators of the crimes have not yet been brought to justice, according to NDTV.
The ministry's advisory, which warned Indian nationals planning travel and education in Canada against crimes, comes in the middle of diplomatic controversy over "referendum" by the pro-Khlistan elements for a separate homeland for Sikhs.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Thursday called the referendum " deeply objectionable" describing it a "farcical exercise held by extremist and radical elements".
Meanwhile, Indian students were asked to register with the Indian mission in Ottawa or consulate in Toronto and Vancouver to be in touch during in any emergency.
The statement suggests the efforts by the High Commission and the Consulates General to better connect with Indian citizens in the event of any requirement or emergency.
Both Indian origins and non-resident Indians in Canada totaling 1.6 million account for more than 3% of Canada's population.
