India may be in a position to bring diplomacy to Russia's war on Ukraine: US spokesperson

Washington: US Secretary of State spokesperson Ned Price said India might be in a position to bring peace to Ukraine because it has a relationship with both Kyiv and Moscow. He pointed out that New Delhi may be able to help initiate dialogue and diplomacy that can "one day put an end to this war."

Stressing that the US continues to hold Russia accountable for its war against Ukraine, he said while countries like India can help, "there is one country that of course has demonstrated no willingness to put an end to the brutal aggression, and that, of course, is Russia." He further said that the war has affected the entire world.

Speaking to the press, Price said that Washington has been engaging with allies and partners around the world including India on Russia's war on Ukraine. "The international community firmly recognizes the need to hold Russia to account for the atrocities that it has committed and its forces are committing in Ukraine," reported ANI.

About India's role, he said the US and India share a commitment to hold rules-based international order that respects territorial integrity and sovereignty. He added that Washington is in regular contact with India regarding what can be done to hold Russia accountable and impose additional costs on Russia for its war.

"India agrees that the restoration of peace in Ukraine is essential. The US agrees with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that today's era is not an era of war. That is at the heart of our global strategic partnership with India. It is at the heart of what we seek to do with Quad with the other bilateral and multilateral work we do with India and Indian partners," said the US spokesperson.
