Hindu temple signboard defaced in US; Indian consulate seeks prompt action

Greenwood: The signboard of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Greenwood, Indiana, was defaced in what authorities are calling a “hateful act”, drawing strong condemnation from the Indian Consulate in Chicago.

“Desecration of main signboard of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Greenwood, Indiana is reprehensible,” the consulate said in a post on X, adding that the matter had been taken up with law enforcement for “prompt action”.

Temple officials said this was the fourth such incident targeting a BAPS temple in less than a year. In a post on X, the temple’s public affairs team said the act had “strengthened our community’s resolve” and reaffirmed its unity against anti-religious behavior.

The consulate stated that the consul general had addressed a gathering of devotees and local leaders, including the Mayor of Greenwood, calling for unity, solidarity and vigilance against miscreants.

Earlier in March, another BAPS temple in California was desecrated by an unidentified person in a similar incident.
