Far-right group supporting Trump charged with sedition

Washington: Donald Trump's exit from power despite losing to Joe Biden shocked USA on 6 January when hundreds of his supporters stormed the US Capitol to obstruct the certification of Joe Biden's election win.

Now top leaders of the far-right Proud Boys group which allegedly involved in the melee that day have been charged with sedition over conspiracy to storm the US capitol.

The group's chairman Enrique Tarrio and four other Proud Boys leaders face seditious conspiracy alongside previous charges of obstructing congressional proceedings, marking a significant development in the case, according to The Guardian.

The Justice Department said in the 33-page indictment Tarrio and other defendants including Joseph Biggs, Ethan Nordean, Zachary Rehl and Dominic Pezzola used for months the encrypted messaging apps for conspiracy.

Meanwhile, the Congressional inquiry into the Capitol attack, which is to start televised hearings, might examine Trump's personal culpability in the incident, according to the report.

Also, the far-right Oath Keepers militia group is also facing similar charges over the Capitol attack.

The justice department reportedly took note in recent weeks about the new information regarding the Proud Boys' plan to storm the Capitol.

Alongside, one of the Boys, Charles Donoghue—facing charges with Tarrio—pleaded guilty to cooperate with investigation in April.

The indictment reportedly said that the group's chairman Tarrio created a chat called " MOSD Leaders Group". Tarrio described the group as "national rally planning committee" which included others including Nordean, Biggs, and Rehl.

The Proud Boys, according to the report, used additional chats to plan "DC trip" asking their members travel "incognito".

A bipartisan US Senate report linked seven deaths to the attack on the Capitol, which failed to stop certification of Biden's win. Trump was impeached for inciting an insurrection but acquitted when enough Senate Republicans stayed loyal, reported The Guardian.
