Ottawa: Dissenting MPs of Justine Trudeau’s Liberal Party of Canada on Wednesday sought the Prime Minister’s resignation giving him an ultimatum to decide his future by October 28, according to reports.
The closed-door meeting saw the MPs expressing their grievances to Trudeau giving vent to the growing dissent within the party, following Canada’s diplomatic row with India.
The weekly caucus meetings that take place while the House of Commons is in session has given MPs an opportunity to voice their concerns and frustrations directly to PM Trudeau.
Mounting pressure on Trudeau, MPs presented a document explaining the case for him to step down but it did not mention the course of action if he fails to meet the deadline.
CBC news reported citing Radio-Canada that 24 MPs signed an agreement asking Trudeau to resign as Liberal leader.
Presenting the document, British Columbia MP Patrick Weiler suggested that with Trudeau’s resignation the Liberal party would see a resurgence similar to the one the Democrats in the US had after President Joe Biden chose not to run for the upcoming presidential elections.
During the three-hour meeting, about 20 MPs asked Trudeau to step down before the next election; however several MPs voiced support to the Trudeau.
Marc Miller, Immigration Minister, acknowledging the frustrations of Liberal MPs, said ‘Fundamentally, this is something that has been simmering for some time and it's important for people to get it out. This isn't a code red situation. The prime minister can sure as hell handle the truth’.
The diplomatic relations between India and Canada nosedived after Trudeau accused India of having involvement in killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which India termed "absurd" and "motivated".
