Chinese scientists’ new 'Bone Glue' can repair fractures in 3 minutes

Beijing: Chinese researchers have developed a medical bone glue capable of repairing fractures in just three minutes.

The product dubbed ‘Bone 02’ is claimed to be an answer to long standing experiments for a bone adhesive to keep fractured bones and orthopaedic devices in place, NDTV reported.

Unveiled by a research team in East China's Zhejiang Province on Wednesday, the glue eliminates often long-drawing process of fixing fractured bones.

Lin Xianfeng, the leader and associate chief orthopaedic surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, claimed the discovery of the glue became possible after observing oysters clinging firmly to a bridge underwater.

Lin reportedly said the adhesive could precisely repair bones within two to three minutes, even in a blood-rich environment.

Naturally absorbed by the body as the bone heals, the glue is huge help as it can avoid the need for another surgery to remove implants.

It is reported that ‘Bone-02’ kept to safety and effectiveness metrics with completing procedures in one of the trials in less than 180 seconds or three minutes.

The achievement comes as the conventional treatment methods requires ‘a large incision to implant steel plates and screws’.

The bone glue, successfully tested in over 150 patients, showed a maximum bonding force of over 400 pounds, suggesting it could replace traditional metal implants alongside reducing the risk of infection and reaction, according to the report citing scientists.

The bone cements and bone void fillers currently available in the markets do not have any adhesive properties.
