China accused of targeting of citizens studying abroad for political activism

Amnesty International has accused China of targeting its citizens studying abroad for their political activism, alleging that some students have faced harassment of family members back home.

According to the rights group, China's intolerance towards political dissent has extended beyond its borders, with reports of intimidation and surveillance of overseas students.

The report by Amnesty International highlights the use of sophisticated technology tools and intimidation tactics by China to crack down on domestic protestors and activists. This pattern of repression, described as "transnational repression", has been observed in various countries, including eight European and North American nations, reported AFP.

Students studying abroad have reported instances where their family members in China received threats after they participated in events abroad, such as commemorations of the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989. These threats included actions to revoke passports, jeopardize employment, hinder career advancements, or restrict personal freedom.

Moreover, students revealed that they had been subjected to surveillance and censorship on Chinese social media platforms, which are often their only means of communication with family due to China's internet firewall. Instances of police showing transcripts of online conversations to parents further illustrate the extent of surveillance faced by overseas students.

The pervasive surveillance and fear of repercussions have led to self-censorship among students, impacting their academic pursuits and mental well-being. Many students expressed concerns about publishing their work or engaging in political discussions due to fear of reprisals from Chinese authorities.

While China has not yet responded to Amnesty International's report, it has previously denied accusations of targeting citizens living abroad. The Chinese government has asserted its respect for other countries' sovereignty and claimed that any law enforcement activities conducted abroad are done in accordance with the law.
