‘Support terrorism’: US detains Muslim journlist for criticising Israel

San Francisco: British journalist and political commentator Sami Hamdi was detained by US immigration authorities at San Francisco International Airport on Sunday, reportedly in response to his public criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza during a speaking tour.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) condemned the detention, calling it “a blatant affront to free speech.” Hamdi had recently spoken at Cair’s Sacramento chapter gala and was scheduled to appear at its Florida chapter event.

According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, Hamdi’s visa was revoked and he is currently in ICE custody pending deportation. Department of Homeland Security press secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that individuals who “support terrorism and undermine American national security” would not be permitted to remain in the country.

The incident has drawn further attention after Trump ally Laura Loomer claimed credit for Hamdi’s detention, citing her lobbying efforts with federal agencies. Loomer, known for her controversial views and past protests, shared the news on social media, describing it as a result of her “relentless pressure.”

Hamdi’s case follows a pattern of recent ICE actions against foreign nationals expressing pro-Palestinian views. Earlier this month, journalist Mario Guevara was deported to El Salvador after livestreaming an anti-Trump protest.

A federal judge recently ruled that the administration’s policy of detaining and deporting foreign scholars over pro-Palestinian views violates constitutional protections. However, the ruling is expected to be challenged in higher courts.

Cair has called for Hamdi’s immediate release, stating that his detention is politically motivated and undermines democratic principles. Legal efforts are underway to contest the action.
