CAIRO: Now the time is to keep a distance from everything. The Health sector is also adopting technology to treat patients remotely where communication will be the major hurdle. But there will be a solution for the Arabic speaking community in the Middle East as a robotic nurse is on its way.
Ain Shams University in Cairo is reported to have tested a robotic nurse that could speak Arabic. The idea of a robotic nurse has been evolved by the COVID pandemic and the preventive measures to thwart the spread of the coronavirus said University President Mahmoud Al-Matini.
The students behind the Arabic Nurse hope that they could use the potentials of the machine in the health sector. Al-Matini said the university had supported the project to optimize its capabilities and use.
The faculties of medicine and nursing are said to have also collaborated with the faculty of computers and information to realise the project, Al-Matini added.
Nagwa Badr, dean of the faculty of computers and information, said the robot, named Shams, speaks Arabic and can recognize the faces of patients or doctors. It can also deal with patient needs and enter health status data.
She added that it can take the necessary samples for analysis and deliver them to the laboratory, bring medication from the pharmacy to the patient, and can also carry out communication between the patient and the treating doctor through a video call. It also performs sterilization operations.
