10 Killed in mass shooting in Sydney's Bondi Beach, two held

Sydney: At least 10 people were shot dead after two gunmen opened fire just a couple of hours ago at Bondi Beach in Australia’s Sydney.

It is reported that gunmen fired around 50 shots just after 6.30 pm local time leading to what Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said ‘shocking and distressing’ scenes.

Anthony Albanese said: ‘Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected.’

Anthony Albanese further stated that his administration was working with ‘the NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed. I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police’.

New South Wales police took to social media platform X around 2.17 pm IST revealing that they were responding to a ‘developing incident’at Bondi Beach and urged people at the scene to ‘take shelter’.

Alongside announcing that the two shooters had been taken into custody, police said that ‘Police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area. Please obey ALL police directions. Do not cross police lines.’

It is reported citing that the Sydney Morning Herald the shooting has taken place when hundreds gathered on the beach on the first night of the eight-day Jewish festival ‘Hanukkah’ to mark the beginning of the festival.
