New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday strongly condemned the terrorist attack targeting Jewish people celebrating the first day of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed India’s support in the fight against all forms of terrorism.
“Strongly condemn the ghastly terrorist attack carried out today at Bondi Beach, Australia, targeting people celebrating the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. On behalf of the people of India, I extend my sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the people of Australia in this hour of grief. India has zero tolerance towards terrorism and supports the fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism,” PM Modi said in a statement shared on X.
The attack left at least 12 people dead, including one shooter, while 29 others, including two police officers, were injured. Australian authorities have identified one of the gunmen as Naveed Akram from Sydney's Bonnyrigg, according to ABC News. While there is no longer an active threat, police have urged the public to avoid the area.
New South Wales (NSW) Police have declared the incident a terrorist attack. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese chaired a National Security Meeting and described the shooting as a “devastating terrorist incident.”
“This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith,” Albanese said. He called the attack “an act of evil antisemitism, terrorism” that has struck the heart of the nation, adding, “An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian.”
Albanese assured that Australian police and security agencies are working to identify anyone connected to the attack and will provide factual updates as quickly as possible. “Every Australian tonight will be, like me, devastated by this attack on our way of life. There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in our nation. Let me be clear: We will eradicate it. Amidst this vile act of violence and hate will emerge a moment of national unity where Australians across the board will embrace their fellow Australians of Jewish faith,” he added.
Earlier, NSW Police Force stated, “Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing, and we continue to urge people to avoid the area. Please obey ALL police directions. Do not cross police lines.”
