Oxygen shortage: death toll rises to 74 in Goa, helpless HC says 'Sorry'

Panaji: Deaths counted 74 from the Goa Medical College and Hospital, where an oxygen pressure dip caused COVID patients to succumb to asphyxiation in the early hours of Friday.

Earlier, at least fifteen patients breathed their last due to the dip in the oxygen supply pressure at Goa Medical College and Hospital.

Considering a PIL, the Mumbai High Court of Goa directed the State government to ensure no more deaths of COVID patients due to oxygen shortage.

The incident that took place in the early morning of Thursday between 2 am and 6 am in the hospital, which is the state's largest Covid facility, shocked other patients.

The relatives and doctors on duty had made frantic calls to the departments concerned when the oxygen pressure started dipping only to hear that oxygen pressure could be restored only in 20 minutes. By then, 15 lives went out of their precious air, reported The Indian Express.

On Tuesday, the death of 26 patients was reported from the same hospital, bringing it to the High Court's notice through a PIL on shortage of oxygen. Responding to the latest deaths, the Court could utter nothing but say "sorry".

Doctors attending the patients acknowledged how pathetic the situation had been for the last three days where oxygen supply and dip in oxygen pressure were reported several times. Doctors say despite their attempt, the gasping patients succumbed to oxygen fluctuation.

The doctors also claimed that calls were made to the central oxygen panel number of the hospital, but went unanswered.
