Instagram is reportedly developing a feature to let users generate AI-powered “likeness” avatars—digital versions of themselves—for advanced photo and video editing, including swapping faces with others’ avatars upon permission.
Tipster Alessandro Paluzzi, a reverse engineer known as @alex193a on X, shared screenshots revealing the potential tool. Users could create their likeness and request consent to use friends’ or acquaintances’ versions in their content; approval notifications would enable swaps while curbing misuse.
The consent model echoes OpenAI’s Sora system, aiming to prevent abuse after Meta faced backlash for earlier celebrity chatbot likenesses, which it later discontinued. While Meta hinted at subscriptions for apps like Instagram last month, pricing for this remains unclear. Instagram has not confirmed the feature.
