Google marks 79th Independence Day with doodle highlighting national achievements

New Delhi: Google on Friday marked India’s 79th Independence Day with a special doodle celebrating the nation’s accomplishments across a range of fields.

The artwork, created by Makarand Narkar and Sonal Vasave of Boomranng Studio, draws on traditional tile designs from different regions of the country. It pays tribute to India’s successes in areas such as space exploration, chess, cricket, and cinema.

“The tiles are a diverse array of styles and textures from different regions in India, ranging from Jaipur blue pottery (Rajasthan) to terracotta relief (West Bengal),” Google said. “Each tile showcases a different style and a different national achievement, from space missions and world chess titles, to cricketing glory and international film recognitions.”

The six-tile doodle spells out the word ‘Google’, with each tile rendered in a distinctive regional style. The first, in Jaipur blue pottery, features the letter ‘G’ with floral motifs; the second includes a floral design and a spaceship; the third shows a cricket ball and bats; the fourth has a traditional Indian pattern; the fifth depicts a chess piece; and the sixth incorporates a cinema reel forming the letters ‘L’ and ‘E’.

Independence Day is celebrated across India on 15 August with official ceremonies, cultural events and personal expressions of patriotism.

“On this day in 1947, India gained its freedom after nearly two centuries of British rule, officially becoming a sovereign republic,” Google noted. The independence movement was led by prominent figures who championed civil disobedience and non-violent protest.

The occasion remains both a commemoration of the past and a celebration of the country’s continuing journey and dynamic future.
