New Delhi: The Khelo India Para Games in Delhi witnessed the gracious presence of numerous acclaimed athletes, both current and former, who have consistently brought honour to the nation.
Among them, Sift Kaur Samra, a talented rifle shooter aspiring for the Paris Olympics, actively participated in this historical event. She marked her presence by presenting medals during the para powerlifting event held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium's weightlifting auditorium.
Fresh from her remarkable performances at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, Sift Kaur Samra, a beneficiary of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), engaged with the athletes, expressing her experience as a novel and inspiring endeavour.
Reflecting on her involvement at the Khelo India Para Games, the double medalist from the Hangzhou Games shared, "The experience of awarding medals at the Khelo India Para Games holds a special place for me. Initially, I questioned if I could be a source of inspiration, but the moment turned out to be truly motivational."
Samra emphasised that this experience would serve as motivation as she looks ahead to the Paris 2024 Olympics, considering it a significant platform not only for herself but also for the para-athletes participating. She acknowledged witnessing immense dedication among the para-athletes, which she found inspiring and invaluable.
The accomplished shooter, holding the world record in the Women's 50m 3P Rifle event, accredited her journey from the TOPS initiative to the Khelo India scholarship scheme, underscoring the pivotal role these programs played in her personal growth.
Highlighting the impact of the Khelo India initiative, she expressed optimism that the Khelo India Para Games would pave the way for the emergence of more para-athletes, further nurturing India's sports landscape.
Expressing appreciation for the Indian government's support towards para-athletes through platforms like Khelo India, Samra envisioned a brighter future for para-sports in India. She believed that the ongoing Games and subsequent editions would continue to inspire and foster the growth of para-sports, foreseeing a more promising landscape for these athletes.
Previously, on Monday, renowned boxer Mary Kom and Fit India influencer Sangram Singh had also graced the event to present medals at the JLN Stadium. More esteemed athletes are anticipated to participate in the forthcoming days as the Games culminate on December 17.
