Malayali star Tahsin Mohammed makes Qatar’s Gulf Cup squad

Doha: Malayali footballer Tahsin Mohammed has been included in Qatar’s 26-member squad for the Gulf Cup, which begins in Saudi Arabia on September 23. The Kannur native, who grew up playing football in Doha, has earned his place in the Annabi squad under former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui.

Tahsin’s selection has sparked excitement among football fans in his hometown of Valapattanam and the wider Malayali expatriate community in Qatar. His inclusion in Qatar’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup had earlier generated similar enthusiasm, with supporters putting up flex boards in his hometown to celebrate the achievement.

However, Tahsin remained on the bench during the World Cup campaign, leaving Malayali fans waiting to see him make his international debut. His inclusion in the Gulf Cup squad has now raised hopes that he could finally take the field for Qatar.

The Qatar Football Association announced a squad combining experienced campaigners and younger players. The team includes established names such as Akram Afif, Hassan Al-Haydos, Almoez Ali, Pedro Miguel and Abdel Aziz Hatem alongside emerging players.

Tahsin, who has developed his football career in Qatar, is among the players selected to represent the country in the regional tournament. His journey from Doha’s football grounds to Qatar’s senior national team has also given the selection special significance for Malayalis, especially after his career.

Qatar’s squad comprises goalkeepers Mahmoud Abunada, Salah Zakaria and Meshaal Barsham, along with defenders and midfielders including Boualem Khoukhi, Karim Boudiaf, Tariq Salman, Assim Madibo and Jassem Gaber.

The tournament in Saudi Arabia will provide Tahsin with another opportunity to make his mark at the international level, with fans now eagerly awaiting his potential debut for Qatar's senior side.
