‘I don’t feel guilty’: Portugal coach Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement
Lisbon: Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has denied feeling responsible for Cristiano Ronaldo's shock international retirement, insisting that he had expected the 41-year-old forward to continue representing the country.
Speaking to the media on Friday after announcing his squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales, Jesus addressed his role in Ronaldo's decision, stating: "I don't feel guilty about anything regarding his departure. I respect his decision."
Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, bringing an end to a record-breaking career of 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal.
The announcement came less than a month after the Portuguese Football Federation suspended him for 30 days and fined him €255 following his departure from the national team's camp. The incident occurred ahead of a Nations League fixture against Denmark on October 1 following a disagreement with Jesus.
The coach admitted he might have rushed things but maintained that Ronaldo's decision was not his fault.
Although Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and expressed his willingness to continue playing for Portugal, he did not apologise to Jesus.
Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at Saudi club Al Nassr before taking charge of Portugal in July, revealed that he had intended to include the forward in his latest squad and fully expected him to return.
He also recalled personally urging Ronaldo to remain with the national team during their discussions in September.
Ronaldo captained Portugal to the 2016 European Championship and three UEFA Nations League titles, cementing his legacy as one of the country's greatest footballing icons.
