Mohammed Shami announces retirement from Test cricket

Mumbai: India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished red-ball career, while confirming that he will continue playing One-Day Internationals and T20 matches. He announced this through his official Instagram account on Friday night.

Shami said his journey in the white jersey had given him unforgettable memories, with every wicket, battle, injury and comeback shaping his career. He also thanked his teammates, coaches, family, Indian fans, the BCCI and the Bengal Cricket Association for their support.

His retirement comes after a prolonged struggle with injuries and an increasingly uncertain international future. Despite recovering fitness and delivering impressive performances in domestic cricket, the fast bowler was repeatedly overlooked by the national selectors.

Shami last represented India in the Champions Trophy, which the team went on to win. He was also left out of the T20 World Cup squad.

During the 2025-26 domestic season, Shami claimed 67 wickets for Bengal, underlining his continued effectiveness despite his absence from the national side.

The 35-year-old had previously dismissed speculation about retirement, saying he would walk away from cricket only when he began feeling tired of the game. He had maintained that he was not considering retirement at the time.

With his Test career now over, Shami will continue to be available for India's limited-overs formats.
