Quito (Ecuador): Ecuadorian footballer Marco Angulo, aged 22, tragically passed away on Monday after being hospitalized for over a month following a car crash on October 7. Angulo had sustained severe head injuries and a lung contusion when the car he was in struck a metal structure at 4:30 AM. The midfielder was rushed to the hospital and underwent treatment, including the insertion of a chest tube. Tragically, two of Angulo’s fellow passengers, Roberto Cabezas Simisterra and Victor Charcopa Nazareno, also players for Independiente Juniors, died in the accident last month.
The Ecuadorian Football Federation expressed its deepest condolences, honoring Angulo's memory and his contributions to the national team. "Marco was not only an outstanding player but also a great teammate," the statement read. "His passing leaves a profound sadness, especially among those who shared countless moments with him."
Angulo made his international debut in November 2023 against Iran, and in his brief career, he was on loan from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati to LDU Quito. Before his MLS move, Angulo began his career at Independiente del Valle, where he won the Copa Ecuador, Copa Sudamericana, and the Ecuadorian league title.
LDU Quito also mourned his loss, with a statement describing his death as an irreparable loss, sending heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. "His departure will leave an indelible mark on our hearts," the club said.
Angulo’s untimely passing is a devastating blow to his family, friends, teammates, and the wider football community.
