Adelaide: Indian star batter Virat Kohli became the leading run-scorer ever in the men's T20I's World Cup during India-Bangladesh Super 12 match on Wednesday, IANS.
Kohli went past the previous record posed by former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who scored a total of 1016 runs. Kohli now has 1065 runs with an average of 88.75 and a strike rate of more than 132.46 in T20 World Cups. He started this T20I tournament with 845 runs in hand.
Kohli, the 33-year-old, was playing his 5th T20I World Cup and became the highest run scorer from 23 innings, while Jayawardene required 31 innings. He has 12 T20I WC half-centuries. However, Jayawardene scored the runs from 754 balls, while Kohli 773 balls.
After Kohli and Jayawardene, Chris Gayle (965), Rohit Sharma (921) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (897) are at the third, fourth and fifth spots on the list of all-time run-scorers in the T20 World Cup history.
Kohli scored 185 runs in his maiden T20 World Cup in 2012; he was the competition's top-scorer in 2014; and the second-highest run-getter in 2016.
In 2014 and 2016, Kohli became the Player of the Tournament and became the only cricketer to receive the honour twice. He won the Player-of-the-Match award six times in a tournament is also a record.
Kohli also holds the record for being the highest run-scorer in all T20 internationals.
His 64 not out off 44 took India to a good total, with the help of KL Rahul (50 off 32) and Suryakumar Yadav (30 off 16), against Bangladesh on Wednesday, winning the match for India.
