Iconic Indian boxer MC Mary Kom underwent ACL surgery for her knee at a Mumbai hospital. Her coach Chhote Lal Yadav said the reconstructive surgery was to repair an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in her left knee.
The six-time world champion suffered the injury during the first few minutes of her 48kg match during the Commonwealth Games selection trials in June. She missed the CWG due to the injury.
In the 2018 edition of CWG, Kom became the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold medal. The 39-year-old last competed in the Tokyo Olympics where she reached the pre-quarterfinals. She had decided to skip the World Championships (May 8-20) to concentrate on the CWG.
Mary Kom is the only woman to win the World Mateur Boxing Championships six times and the only woman to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships. She is also the only boxer (male or female) to win eight World Championship medals.
