Glasgow: India launched its Commonwealth Games boxing campaign in spectacular fashion as Preeti Pawar and Jaismine Lamboria clinched gold medals, while Jadumani Singh settled for silver after falling short in the men's final. Indian athletes also boosted the country's medal tally with podium finishes in triple jump and para athletics.
The biggest story belonged to reigning world champion Jaismine Lamboria, who produced a commanding 5-0 victory over Northern Ireland's Michaela Walsh in the women's 57kg final. Lamboria dethroned the defending Commonwealth champion to secure a memorable gold.
Her triumph marked a remarkable comeback after being hospitalised just 40 days ago with severe fever and gastrointestinal illness. Returning to competition with only three weeks of training, the 57kg boxer completed one of the most inspiring revivals in Indian sporting history, with reports crediting the support of the Boxing Federation of India, her coaches and the sports science team.
World No. 3 Preeti Pawar added another gold by outclassing Canada's Scarlett Delgado 5-0 in the women's 54kg final. The 22-year-old dominated the contest from start to finish to deliver India's second boxing title.
India narrowly missed a clean sweep as Jadumani Singh, a strong gold contender, went down 5-0 to Australia's Joe Dixon in the men's 55kg final. Despite an impressive opening round, Singh was unable to stop the Australian from claiming the title, settling for a hard-fought silver.
