Big solar storm to hit Earth in a few days, scientists warn

New Delhi: Experts at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) urged Indian satellite operators to take all precautions against the upcoming big solar storm that will hit Earth, NDTV reported.

The precautions are taken after American scientists warned that the solar storm may well affect electronic communications.

It is reported that the next few days are crucial with the solar storm, which is sudden explosion of particles, energy and magnetic field blasting away from the sun, heading towards Earth.

Dr Annapurni Subramanian, Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, said ‘We would expect some kind of interference in the magnetosphere.’

Annapurni Subramanian expanded on it saying that it might take a few days to hit Earth, adding that ‘We expect to do something tonight or tomorrow night to see if anything is happening’.

In May, a strong solar storm caused aurora displays in the Northern Hemisphere.

When hitting Earth, solar storm can cause disturbance in Earth's magnetic field, known as a geomagnetic storm.

The impact can lead to radio blackouts, power outages, and beautiful auroras.

However, solar storms do not cause direct harm to humans as Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere are protecting us from them.
