A new AI tool developed by Google DeepMind is helping bridge the divide between people with opposing views during public policy discussions.
The tool, called the Habermas Machine, has shown great potential in mediating conversations and generating balanced summaries of differing opinions.
According to a study published in Science on October 17, 2024, participants preferred AI-generated summaries over those produced by human mediators, signaling a breakthrough in the use of AI for complex discussions.
Developed by a team led by Christopher Summerfield, Research Director at the UK AI Safety Institute, the tool was tested with groups of participants who debated UK public policy topics. The AI synthesized their views into a single coherent summary, which was then evaluated.
Astonishingly, 56% of participants rated the AI summaries as more balanced and representative than those created by human moderators. Independent reviewers also gave higher marks to the AI's summaries for fairness and clarity.
Summerfield explained that the AI was programmed to generate summaries that aligned with the preferences of group members, a step toward improving deliberative processes. The tool's potential to foster agreement in public debates, based on this trial with 439 UK residents, suggests it could play a significant role in policy-making in the future.
While the results are promising, some experts, like AI researcher Ethan Busby from Brigham Young University, view this as a positive development for democratic processes. However, others, such as Sammy McKinney from the University of Cambridge, caution that the reduced human interaction in such discussions could impact the depth of engagement in policy deliberations.
