MIT experts warn of cognitive surrender in students as AI use grows
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is changing how it teaches and assesses students as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes a bigger part of college life, after finding that growing reliance on AI is affecting how students learn.
A committee of MIT professors and students spent five months examining how students use AI and its impact on education. Its report found that study groups are becoming less common and fewer students are attending teachers’ office hours.
The report also found that regular assignments and take-home exams are becoming less effective for assessing what students actually know. AI tools can now answer many college-level questions, making it harder for teachers to determine whether students have understood the subject themselves.
The committee warned that excessive reliance on AI could reduce students’ confidence in their own abilities. Students may also turn to AI immediately when they encounter difficult questions rather than attempting to solve them independently. The report described this behaviour as “cognitive surrender”.
AI use is widespread among MIT students. About 46% of undergraduate students surveyed said they use large language models every day, while 90% said they were concerned about becoming too dependent on AI.
The report also found that more students believe AI could make them replaceable than those who think it will make them more capable.
MIT said it does not want to respond by constantly policing students for AI use. Instead, it wants to rethink assessment methods, with the committee recommending more oral examinations, long-term projects and portfolios, as well as more opportunities for students to work together in person.
The committee also called for universities to reconsider the emphasis on grades and GPA, arguing that lower pressure around grades could reduce incentives to misuse AI.
It further warned against replacing undergraduate research assistants with AI simply because it is cheaper.
