LS Speaker & RS Chairman mulls on Virtual Parliament

New Delhi: Raya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met on Monday to discuss the demand of MPs to hold parliamentary committee meetings via video conferencing.

Naidu and Birla decided to refer the matter to the Rules Committee of both the houses after considering the existing rules related to confidentiality and implications of holding such meetings.

They also discussed holding the Monsoon Session of Parliament, usually held between mid-July and mid-August.

Considering the social distancing norms in place, they decided to explore the use of technology.

One report says that they are likely to explore the option of virtual Parliament.

The reason is proceedings of the Houses do not require confidentiality and they are telecast live, too.

Meanwhile, chairpersons of different parliamentary panels are empowered to convene regular meetings of the committees that are usually held in Parliament complex.
