Texas/US: A 21-year-old student of Indian origin was among four people killed in a shooting in Austin, Texas, early Sunday, authorities said.
The victim has been identified as Savita Shah, a graduate student at the University of Texas. The incident occurred near a bar on West Sixth Street when a gunman opened fire on a crowd. At least 14 people, including students, sustained injuries in the attack, with three reported to be in critical condition.
The suspected shooter was identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, described as being of Senegalese origin. Police shot and killed the gunman at the scene, bringing the violence to an end.
Security has since been tightened at the University of Texas campus as a precautionary measure following the incident. University authorities have not released further details but are coordinating with law enforcement officials.
Members of the Indian-American community in Austin expressed grief over the death of Savita Shah and extended condolences to her family. Community leaders have also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
