Karnataka govt decides against implementing NRC

Bengaluru: Fearing backlash, BJP government in Karnataka decided to go easy on implementing the National Register of Citizens NRC in the state.

The BS Yediyurappa-led government has decided against implementing NRC , but has planned to create a database of immigrants living in Karnataka. The database will records names of the immigrants, and foreign nationals overstaying their visa.

The fresh decision comes a fortnight after the state Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced plans to implement NRC in the state.

At the time he said that the move was part of the Central government's plan to extend the NRC across the country.  At least 800 have been reportedly overstaying their visas in the state.
