Supreme Court seeks fresh report on J&K child detention

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the juvenile justice committee of Jammu and Kashmir High Court to verify allegation of illegal detentions of children.

The Supreme Court wanted allegations verified because the earlier report, based on police information, of the panel had given clean chit to the government.

The bench of Justices  N.V. Ramana, R. Subhash Reddy and Bhushan Gavai wanted a fresh report from  the panel.

In its earlier report on October1, the committee told the court that 144 children were in detention in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of the state’s special status.

The reports also said that 142  of the children had been released.

“The state machinery has been constantly upholding the rule of law and not a single juvenile in conflict with law has been illegally detained,” the committee had stated in its report.

The court wanted the panel to submit report in order to check the veracity of the petition by child rights activists Enakshi Ganguly and Shanti Sinha who alleged violation of child rights by forces.
