New Delhi: BJP’s frenzy campaigning for cow protection may chip away at the party’s votes in the rural India, where increasing cow population already become a problem for farmers.
Cows ambling around village streets stray into farms eating away crops. Already hit hard by plunge in crop prices, the farmers now face a double whammy situation from stray cows, says a report by Reuters.
Protecting cows has long been one of BJP’s rallying point meant to attract votes.
As a result, there has been a sharp uptick in the number of cows and a lot of them, no longer provide milk, end up in streets. People now blame the policies of the BJP government for the problems, according to the report.
“We already had enough problems and now the government has created one more,” Reuters quoted a man as saying.
More than 50 farmers told Reuters they would think twice before voting for BJP.
Their disillusionment stems from both the cattle issue and low farm prices. Most of them voted for BJP in the last election in 2014.
