Triple talaq and Citizenship bills lapse as Rajya Sabha adjourns sine die

New Delhi:  Triple talaq and Citizenship bills would lapse as the government failed to introduce them before Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on February 13.

As for the Citizenship bill, the government faced intense protest in the Northern States calling it a violation of Assam accord

It could help granting citizenship to six religious minorities — Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Parsis, Christians and Buddhists — from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who came to India before 2014.

In its last effort, the government tried to push through it by listing the bill on February 12.

In the case of the triple talaq bill, the government faced long odds after the Opposition questioned turning of talaq or divorce into a criminal offence, where marriage is a civil arrangement.
