Madras HC bans online sale of medicines

Chennai: The Madras High Court on Wednesday directed Union Ministry of Health and Family welfare and competent authorities under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 to forthwith stop online sale of drugs sold only in pharmacies on the prescription of registered doctors.

The interim order was passed by Justice R. Mahadevan, based on a writ petition filed by Tamil Nadu Chemists and Druggists Association.

The association however in its plea sought the ban of websites that sell drugs online.

Petition sought the ban to be in place until Centre makes legal framework for their sale.
