Bullet stuck in neck, Dr Kafeel Khan's brother forced to wait hours for surgery

Lucknow: Dr Kafeel Khan has accused that his brother Kashif Jameel, was forced to wait for hours for a surgery, with bullet stuck in his neck. Dr. Khan and his family said the Gorakhpur Police violated the general guidelines on emergency medico legal case (MLC).

According to Dr. Kafeel, the police insisted on formalities of MLC first and surgery of Kashif later for the removal of the bullet stuck in his neck.

Moreover, they took the bullet-riddled Kashif Jameel to BRD Medical College for a repeat MLC when the same was already done at the Gorakhpur District Hospital.

Doctors at the BRD Medical College, however, refused to entertain police request for a repeat MLC, forcing the Gorakhpur Police to bring back Star Hospital for the urgent surgery.  In all, he had to be shunted to three hospitals for receiving treatment.

Dr. Kafeel pointed out that the guidelines on such emergency cases are clear that the "treatment of every medico-legal case will take precedence over medico-legal formalities."

Despite the clear cut directives, there was an inordinate delay of over 4 hours, said Dr. Kafeel.
