Nation mourns Vajpayee

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah on Thursday led a host of leaders in paying homage to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose body was lying in state at his residence after it was brought from the hospital. 

Later Modi consoled foster daughter Namita, foster son-in-law Ranjan Bhattacharya, other members of the foster family and his long-time associate Shiv Kumar. 

President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice Presidednt M. Venkaiah Naidu also paid homage to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, at his residence. Kovind, who was accompanied by his wife Savita, placed a wreath near Vajpayee's body.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi paid homage to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, at his residence.  Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accompanied by his wife also placed a wreath and paid homage to Vajpayee. 

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vashundhra Raje, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das and Finance Commission Chairman N.K. Singh were among those who paid homage to the late leader at his residence. 

Former Vice President Hamid Ansari, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Yoga guru Swami Ramdev also paid homage. 

Yashwant Sinha, who held the finance and external affairs minister portfolio in Vajpayee's cabinet, also paid tributes to the former prime minister. 

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and all the three armed forces chiefs on Friday led a host of leaders in paying homage to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Officers from three forces draped the body in the Tricolour before enabling people to pay their last respects at his residence in central Delhi's Krishna Menon Marg.

Indian Navy Chief Sunil Lanba, Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat, Indian Air Force Chief B.S. Dhanoa were among those who paid homage to the late leader who died at the age of 93 at the AIIMS on Thursday. 

Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, famous song writer Javed Akthar and his wife Shabana Azmi also paid their homage to Vajpayee.

 Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao also paid his homage to the former Prime Minister. Rao said that Vajpayee led politics with highest standards and stood tall as a role model for the country and the world. In his condolence message, Rao said Vajpayee was as a great parliamentarian and described his demise as a great loss.

The Karnataka government on Thursday declared a seven-day state mourning as a mark of respect to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who died in New Delhi. "No official programmes or engagements will be held during the mourning period (August 16-22). The national flag will fly at half mast on government buildings across the state," the statement said here.

The state also declared a holiday on Friday for schools, colleges and government offices in all districts, except those where officials are involved in rescue and relief operations following heavy rains.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will fly to New Delhi on Friday morning to pay his last respects to Vajpayee at the latter's residence.

Tamil Nadu government also issued an order on Thursday declaring Friday as a holiday for educational institutions, state government offices and undertakings owned by the government as a mark of respect to late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister.

A state was ordered for seven days from August 16 to August 22. During the period of mourning, the national flag will be flown half mast and there will be no official entertainment.

The West Bengal government has declared a half-day holiday on Friday as a mark of respect to former Prime Minister who died on Thursday. "State government has declared half-day holiday tomorrow for all state government offices, state government undertakings, urban local bodies, government aided institutions, schools, colleges and universities," an official said on Thursday.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Thursday condoled the death of former Prime Minister describing him as a "towering personality of modern India".

"While we are saddened by his demise, it is also an occasion to celebrate the life of Vajpayee, who was a towering leader and a shining star who stood tall and served the nation with everything he had. Within and outside India, Vajpayee made all Indians proud with his statesmanship," Rio said in his message.

"Vajpayee laid importance on building of infrastructure, protecting tolerance and promoting national unity. He is one of those (leaders) responsible for India's forward march today."

The Chief Minister recollected Vajpayee serious concern for Nagaland's development after he announcement a package for its development as the then Prime Minister.

 The Goa government on Thursday announced a seven-day state mourning over former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's demise.  All government offices, public sector undertakings, local autonomous bodies and educational institutions will also remain closed on Friday.

Vajpayee's body will be brought to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters at 6-A Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg at 9 a.m. His funeral procession will begin at 1 p.m. and the last rites will be performed at 4 p.m. at Smriti Sthal.

Vajpayee was a founder member of the BJP and the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete a full term in office. He was at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for nine weeks before he passed away.
