Karunanidhi lashes out at Modi govt for renaming Teacher's Day as Guru Utsav

Chennai: DMK Chief M Karunanidhi on Sunday took exception to the Human Resource Development Ministry's plan to celebrate Teacher's Day as 'Guru Utsav' and alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched to downgrade Tamil language and society by such a move.

"This morning I read a newspaper report that the Central Government has issued a circular to celebrate Teacher's Day (September 5) as Guru Utsav hereafter. We have been celebrating Teacher's Day for several years. This is an apt example of hatching a conspiracy to downgrade Tamil language and those who made sacrifices for its welfare", he said.

The DMK patriarch, who attended the marriage of the daughter of former assembly secretary M Selvaraj here, noted that the ceremony was held as per Tamil culture and requested everyone to work for the welfare of Tamil and the cause of Tamil society.
