Dubai RTA plans intercity bus service expansion to enhance passenger commute across UAE

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced plans to expand Dubai’s citywide and intercity bus network in response to increasing demand for integrated public transport. The initiative aims to align bus services with other transit modes, including the metro, tram and marine transport, to enhance the efficiency of commutes across the emirate and the UAE.

The announcement follows the RTA’s recent ‘Talk to Us’ virtual session, which gathered commuter feedback on transport services. Discussions focused on improving internal bus routes within Dubai and enhancing intercity connectivity with other emirates.

"The session concluded with several actionable suggestions and observations, including the potential expansion of the Dubai bus network and intercity bus service," RTA said in a statement.

"This proposal responds to the growing demand for public bus services, and such integration is vital to ensuring smooth and efficient daily commutes for passengers across the UAE."

RTA’s data shows buses transported 89.2 million passengers from January to June this year, representing 24.5% of Dubai’s total public transport ridership during the first half of 2024. The figures underline the importance of expanding services to meet growing needs.

The expansion proposal aligns with broader efforts by the RTA to tackle traffic congestion during peak hours. Earlier this month, the authority suggested implementing remote and flexible work policies to reduce peak-hour traffic by up to 30%. Citing studies, the RTA highlighted how a two-hour flexible work start window or remote workdays four to five times a month could alleviate morning rush-hour congestion.

Additional strategies under consideration include expanding truck movement restrictions, adding dedicated lanes for buses and taxis, and improving first- and last-mile transit options. The measures aim to encourage greater use of public transport and carpooling among residents and visitors.

With Dubai’s rapid growth and the increasing emphasis on sustainability, the RTA’s plans reflect a strategic approach to enhancing public transportation and reducing reliance on private vehicles. Further details on the expansion timeline are expected in the near future.
