Dubai has enforced a ban on single-use plastic and paper bags starting on June 1. Shoppers in malls and supermarkets have been seen adapting by carrying items in their hands, using trolleys and purchasing reusable bags.
The ban requires stores to stop offering free alternatives to single-use bags. Since the beginning of the year, businesses were mandated to impose a 25-fil charge on single-use plastic bags. Dubai Municipality had previously announced that charges for single-use plastic bags would apply only until May 31. The ban now includes all single-use bags 57 microns or thinner, regardless of the material.
Shoppers have been encouraged to bring their own reusable carriers.
Violators of the ban will be fined Dh200. If the same violation occurs within one year, the penalty will be doubled, with a maximum of Dh2,000.
Some retailers have stated they will provide alternatives to help customers transport their purchases.
