Abu Dhabi will ban single-use Styrofoam products starting June 1, announces the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development on X.
The ban includes cups, lids, plates, beverage containers and food receptacles for immediate consumption.
Exemptions to this ban include reusable storage boxes, coolers and items intended for medical use.
This move extends the Abu Dhabi Single-Use Plastic Policy, which was launched in May 2020.
The policy previously banned the sale of single-use plastic bags from June 1, 2022, resulting in a 95% reduction in their use.
Other emirates in the UAE have also implemented similar bans.
Sharjah banned single-use plastic bags on January 1, 2024 and announced on April 22 that manufacturing of these bags had stopped.
Dubai enforced a ban on single-use plastic from January 1, 2024, with fines of up to Dh2,000 for violations.
These actions follow the federal government's January 2023 announcement of a nationwide ban on single-use plastic from 2024.
