3 Sharjah sites added to Islamic World Heritage List

The Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) announced that Dibba Al Hisn Fort, Fili Fort, and Wadi Shees have been officially included in the Islamic World Heritage List by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO). This recognition shows the cultural and historical significance of these sites and their contribution to preserving heritage for future generations.

The ICESCO Heritage Committee made the announcement, which included the registration of 91 historical sites and cultural elements, during its 12th meeting held in Shusha, Azerbaijan, the 2024 Islamic World Cultural Capital.

Dibba Al Hisn Fort, a vital center of trade and cultural exchange for over five centuries, holds artefacts from regions such as China, India and Europe, highlighting its importance in regional commerce. Fili Fort, located strategically between Al Dhaid and Oman, played a significant role in protecting water resources and trade routes, supported by the historic aflaj irrigation system. Wadi Shees, celebrated for its natural beauty, is an environmentally significant site featuring ancient irrigation systems and rare wildlife species.

The SAA, in collaboration with the Authority for Initiatives Implementation and Infrastructure Development (Mubadara), submitted the nomination files for these sites to ICESCO. Eisa Yousif, Director-General of the SAA, expressed gratitude to Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for his continuous support in preserving Sharjah’s rich heritage. He emphasized that this achievement reflects Sharjah’s commitment to safeguarding its cultural identity and contributing to global heritage preservation efforts.
