Saudi Oversight authority issues statement on Riyadh food poisoning

Riyadh: Following the recent food poisoning incident at a Riyadh restaurant, the Kingdom’s Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority, Nazaha, has pledged accountability for those negligent in public health and safety measures.

Nazaha announced measures against obstruction of the investigation and concealment of vital information regarding the poisoning. The incident in late April, caused by clostridium botulinum, was traced back to food from a Hamburgini fast-food restaurant, resulting in hospitalizations and one fatality.

The Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing suspended the distribution of Bon Tum mayonnaise after tests confirmed clostridium botulinum. Operations at the Bon Tum factory were halted accordingly.

Nazaha's initial investigations revealed attempts to conceal evidence, implicating some food establishment inspectors. Royal directives mandate holding all responsible officials accountable.

Nazaha emphasized the formation of a high-level committee to oversee accountability measures. Comprehensive reports detailing the incident, causes and potentially responsible parties were swiftly produced.

Laboratory testing confirmed the poisoning's cause, with local and international specialists aiding in the process. Nazaha assured the incident had been contained and resolved
