Saudi: KAFD launches circular monorail project with six trains to boost urban connectivity in Riyadh

The King Abdullah Financial District Development and Management Company (KAFD DMC) in Riyadh has launched a new driverless monorail project aimed at enhancing urban mobility and facilitating pedestrian flow within the district. The project, spanning 3.6 kilometers, will feature an autonomous, driverless system, revealing Riyadh’s commitment to sustainable, efficient transportation.

Announced during the 8th Future Investment Initiative (FII8) Conference, the monorail initiative includes a contract signed with CRRC (Hong Kong) Co. Limited, CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co. Ltd, and Hassan Allam Construction Saudi. Once completed, the monorail will consist of six trains operating along a circular track with six stations, strategically placed to connect office buildings, retail areas, and leisure facilities.

Designed to integrate seamlessly with the Riyadh Metro, the monorail will facilitate convenient transfers and enhance accessibility throughout the city. This development aligns with KAFD’s “10-Minute City” vision, where essential services and amenities are accessible within a short walk.

Stephen Thomas, Chief Operations Officer of KAFD DMC, commented on the importance of modern urban transportation, stating, “With this project, we are enhancing the quality of life for KAFD's residents and visitors while contributing to the long-term sustainability of Riyadh".

The monorail is expected to carry up to 3,500 passengers per hour during peak times, supporting KAFD’s goal of providing urban solutions that improve residents' quality of life while promoting environmental sustainability. The project positions KAFD as a global model in urban mobility advancements.

Situated in Riyadh’s center, the 1.6 million square meter King Abdullah Financial District is a mixed-use development featuring 95 buildings, including Grade A offices, upscale residences, retail spaces, luxury hospitality and entertainment venues, all interconnected to encourage walkability. The monorail project is seen as a pivotal step in transforming the district into a highly accessible, sustainable urban environment.
