Saudi Arabia launches first hydrogen-powered bus

Al-Ahsa Governor Prince Saud bin Talal bin Badr on Thursday inaugurated Saudi Arabia’s first hydrogen-powered bus, marking a significant milestone in sustainable transportation for the Kingdom. The ceremony was attended by Rumaih bin Mohammed Al-Rumaih, deputy minister of transport and logistics and acting chairman of the Saudi Public Transport Authority.

The hydrogen bus, capable of carrying 45 passengers and travelling up to 635 kilometres on a single charge, will operate daily between Dammam and Al-Ahsa, covering a route of 359 kilometres. This initiative is part of the intercity transport services offered by SAPTCO ALSA for Transportation, which holds the concession for the Southern region.

During the launch event, Prince Saud viewed a detailed presentation on the bus’s operational mechanisms, fueling process, safety standards and its potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions. Following the presentation, the prince joined participants for a ride on the hydrogen-powered bus, touring the region and highlighting its innovative approach to sustainable mobility.
