Moroni: The Saudi Press Agency reported that a team from Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) laid the foundation stone for a $5 million water project in Moroni, Comoros.
The Friday report stated that the function was attended by Minister of Energy, Water and Hydrocarbons of Comoros Ali Abrau, Minister of Finance and Budget Mazi Abdo, and Saudi Ambassador to Comoros Atallah bin Zayed Al-Zayed.
The project is intended to aid nearly 83,000 people in 17 villages, supporting water and food security. The project is expected to prevent disease and epidemics, providing access to clean potable water.
The project's objective is to furnish a water treatment plant and rehabilitate and construct water tanks and distribution networks in villages. It will improve the quality of water already available in established water distribution networks.
Comoros minister Abrau appreciated Saudi Arabia's efforts in Comoros to help in developing the country as well as creating job opportunities there since 1981.
SFD's director-general of the Arab Countries Operations Department, Bandar Al-Obaid, said that the project would back the water sector in Comoros.
SFD has provided four development projects since 1981 to Comoros. They were through soft development loans worth more than $61 million and three grants provided by the Kingdom worth $10 million.
