Riyadh to add 94 Metro trains and extend Red Line to Diriyah
Riyadh will expand its Metro fleet to 277 trains and extend the Red Line towards Diriyah with five additional stations as the capital develops its transport network to serve a growing population.
Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al-Sultan, chief executive of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, said contracts had been signed to purchase 94 trains, adding to the existing fleet of 183.
Speaking at a government press conference on Monday, October 12, he said the additional trains and Red Line extension would increase passenger capacity and improve connections across the city.
Riyadh’s public transport network has recorded approximately 500 million passenger journeys since operations began, including more than 300 million on the Metro.
Al-Sultan also outlined plans to develop approximately 700 kilometres of major roads, with new bridges, tunnels and intersections intended to improve traffic flow and expand road capacity.
He said population growth was increasing demand for efficient transport, making infrastructure and public transport development central to the capital’s planning.
Media Minister Salman bin Yousef Al-Dosari, who also addressed the conference, said Saudi Arabia remained committed to protecting citizens and residents while continuing its development programs.
He urged the public to obtain information from official sources and avoid sharing unverified images, videos or reports concerning security and military operations.
Al-Dosari also said more than 63,000 Saudi families became first-time homeowners during the first half of 2026.
The conference covered infrastructure, public transport, urban sustainability and living standards as Riyadh’s population and its role in business, investment and international engagement continue to grow.
