Riyadh Governor sponsors opening of International Terminal 2 at King Khalid Airport

Governor of Riyadh Region Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz on Monday sponsored the opening ceremony of International Terminal 2 at King Khalid International Airport and announced the completion of the development project for Terminals 1 and 2.

In a statement, Prince Faisal said Riyadh has become a global meeting point for major events, conferences and forums. He said King Khalid International Airport has developed into a prominent architectural landmark, competing with major international airports in design, services, public facilities and infrastructure. He praised the role of all sectors operating at the airport and the development projects carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services.

Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, President of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Chairman of the Board of Directors of MATARAT Holding Company, said the completion of the expansion of International Terminals 1 and 2, along with the opening of Terminal 2.

He said the project improves infrastructure and operational systems, contributing to better passenger services and more efficient air operations. Following the expansion, the combined capacity of the two terminals has reached about 14 million passengers per year, up from six million previously, an increase of more than 130 percent.

Al-Duailej said King Khalid International Airport plays a significant economic role, contributing an estimated 2.2 percent to Riyadh’s gross domestic product in 2024, equivalent to about SAR22.5 billion. He said the airport also provides nearly 66,000 direct and indirect jobs.

He added that the project supports tourism activity, allows airlines to expand services and aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 goals related to air connectivity and aviation sector development.

Under the development plan, International Departure Terminal 1 has been allocated to international flights operated by Flyadeal and flynas, while Terminal 2 serves Saudia and Riyadh Air. Departure areas across the two terminals include 114 check-in counters, 43 manned passport counters and 20 automated e-gates.

Arrival areas include 75 counters, 22 automated passport e-gates and eight customs inspection devices, providing capacity to handle international passenger traffic efficiently.
