Hajj 2024: 70-year-old scout leader serves pilgrims in six languages

The Hajj season highlights the spirit of faith, solidarity and volunteerism, with 70-year-old scout leader Abdulwahed bin Abdulmalik Khayyat standing out for his exceptional service.

Khayyat's fluency in six languages—English, Hausa, Urdu, Indonesian, Persian and Arabic—has enabled him to assist pilgrims from various nationalities at the Al-Aziziyah Camp in Makkah for over 25 years.

Driven by commitment, Khayyat continues to support pilgrims during their spiritual journey, emphasizing that age is no barrier to service.

Khayyat believes that serving pilgrims involves more than providing assistance, but it is about building a community and fostering responsibility among volunteers.

Khayyat noted the motivational impact experienced members have on younger scouts, saying that seeing older members share the honour of service inspires young scouts to offer exceptional support.

Khayyat's dedication exemplifies the enduring spirit of volunteerism and the significant impact one individual can have on the global congregation of pilgrims.
