In the wake of over a year marked by intense military operations in Gaza, a coalition of Israeli citizens has issued a compelling appeal for the international community to exert pressure on Israel to implement an immediate ceasefire.
The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, massive displacement, and innumerable injuries, leading many commentators to label the strikes as genocidal. Recently, the war's scope has expanded, with strikes reported in Lebanon and retaliatory actions from Iran, heightening tensions across the region.
The letter, signed by more than 2,700 Israeli citizens, was published by Israeli Citizens for International Pressure. It calls on various global entities, including the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and the League of Arab States, to take decisive actions, including sanctions, aimed at achieving a ceasefire between Israel and its neighbours. The signatories stress that this intervention is crucial not only for the future of both peoples in Israel and Palestine but also for the broader stability and rights to security and life in the region.
Many of the signatories are veteran activists who have long advocated for peace and coexistence, expressing deep concern for the future of all residents of the land. While they condemn the war crimes committed by Hamas and other groups during the October 7 attacks, they equally denounce the actions of the Israeli government. They highlight that, despite the severity of the ongoing situation, a significant portion of the Israeli populace supports the war efforts, making internal change increasingly unlikely.
The letter outlines the government's failures, accusing it of abandoning hostages and neglecting both northern and southern residents of Israel. It also points to the persecution and silencing of Palestinian citizens by state authorities and the general public, arguing that such repression hampers broader support for their cause.
“The lack of true international pressure, coupled with ongoing arms supplies and partnerships with Israel, fosters a belief among many Israelis that their government’s policies are internationally endorsed,” the letter asserts. The signatories criticise the lack of tangible actions accompanying the global outcry against Israel's military operations, stating, “We are replete with empty words and declarations.”
The call for international intervention is underscored by a sense of urgency. The signatories argue that every passing day further distances the possibility of a regional agreement and reconciliation, which they see as essential for a secure future for Jewish Israelis. They emphasise that achieving peace will necessitate lengthy processes, but insist that immediate cessation of violence is imperative.
