Gaza City: In one of the largest mass funerals in recent Palestinian history, families in Gaza City on Sunday buried around 100 people whose remains were pulled from the wreckage of destroyed homes in the Al-Zaytoun neighbourhood after lying beneath the debris for more than two years.

Palestinian journalists and civil defence sources said about 70 of those interred were children, with the dead also including women and members of several families killed when Israeli strikes hit residential buildings in the area.

The funeral followed days of painstaking work by civil defence crews, who combed through collapsed structures to reach the victims. At one location, the remains of 55 people were recovered from a family home struck by an Israeli airstrike on 19 November 2023, while more than 60 displaced Palestinians were sheltering inside. Hundreds of mourners gathered with candles, flowers and photographs as bodies wrapped in shrouds and draped in Palestinian flags were carried in a procession through Al-Zaytoun before being laid to rest at the Martyrs’ Cemetery following funeral prayers.

Recovery operations are continuing across Gaza City and northern and central parts of the enclave, where teams are now searching 147 destroyed homes believed to hold an estimated 1,072 bodies. An earlier phase saw civil defence crews recover around 333 bodies and remains from 54 sites, but officials have warned that work is being hampered by shortages of heavy machinery, protective gear and search equipment. Palestinian authorities said the ceasefire that took effect on 10 October 2025 was expected to allow the entry of excavators and other equipment needed to accelerate recovery, but progress remains slow.

Israel’s war on Gaza began after the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, which killed about 1,200 people, according to Israeli authorities. The subsequent Israeli military offensive has killed more than 73,651 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry.
