Muscat to Riyadh: International bus service starts today

The first international passenger bus service between Muscat and Riyadh is set to commence operations on Thursday, creating a direct and convenient link between the capitals of Oman and Saudi Arabia. The service, facilitated by Al Khanjary Transport, is through the Empty Quarter road, shortening the travel time and enhancing connectivity between the two countries.

Rashid al Khanjary, owner of Al Khanjary Transport, shared details about the service, saying, "The bus will start daily from Muscat at 6 am and from Riyadh (Azizia area) at 5 pm. The travel will take approximately 18 to 20 hours depending on the time taken for immigration and formalities at the border. Timings from Riyadh will be adjusted as per passenger demand."

The route is strategically planned with three stops in the Sultanate of Oman – Ruwi, Nizwa and Ibri. On the Saudi side, the service will include a stop at Dammam, operating to the Saudi capital via Dammam in the Eastern province.

The one-way promotional fare, available until the end of the month, stands at RO25 or SR250. The regular fares will be RO35 or SR350 post this promotional period. Al Khanjary Transport aims to make this service accessible, adhering to the Saudi authorities' requirement of a minimum of 25 passengers per journey.

Khanjary acknowledged that the route via Dammam might add extra kilometres, but the utilization of a dual carriageway promises a comfortable and efficient journey. The company has ensured passenger comfort by assigning two drivers for the route, allowing for rest stops along the way.

Citizens and expatriates can avail of this groundbreaking service. While expatriates have the option to obtain a visa, certain nationals may benefit from visa-on-arrival options or other exemptions, facilitating seamless cross-border travel.

This international bus service signifies regional transportation and fosters stronger ties between Oman and Saudi Arabia. As the service kicks off, it opens new possibilities for collaboration and cultural exchange, marking a milestone in the ever-evolving landscape of regional connectivity.
