Israel says troops will remain in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza until further notice

Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday that Israeli troops would remain in security zones in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza "until further notice" to protect the country's residents from security threats.

"The IDF will remain in the security zones in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza until further notice, in order to protect Israel's residents and communities from jihadist terrorists," Katz said, according to the defence ministry.

Speaking at a ceremony honouring Israeli soldiers killed in the 2006 Lebanon war, Katz said Israel would not withdraw from the security zones. He also warned that Iran would be struck with "full force" if it attacked Israel over its military operations in Lebanon.

His remarks came days after Israel and Lebanon signed a US-sponsored framework agreement aimed at paving the way for peace between the two countries and the disarmament of the Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials have repeatedly said Israeli troops will remain in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed.

Hezbollah entered the conflict in early March by launching rockets at Israel following the killing of Iran's supreme leader in US-Israeli strikes. Israel responded with extensive airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon.

According to Lebanon's health ministry, nearly 4,300 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since the conflict began. The Israeli military said it has lost 38 soldiers and one civilian contractor in Lebanon during the same period.

Israel has also carried out repeated military operations in Syria since the overthrow of former president Bashar al-Assad, saying it aims to establish a demilitarised zone in southern Syria.

In Gaza, Israeli forces currently control nearly 70% of the territory. Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the ceasefire that has been in effect since October last year.
